A new study revealed that a good intake of turmeric can help prevent the onset of dementia. By eating curry dishes for at least once a week, a person's risk of suffering from dementia is greatly reduced, thereby helping one's chances of steering clear of this degenerative disease.
Curcumin And The Brain
Huffington Post reported that researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia, analyzed the impact of curcumin on the brain. Curcumin is a chemical found in turmeric, a spice that is used in concocting curry dishes.
According to the study, curcumin has the ability to improve memory function. It blocks proteins that destroy the brain's neurons from causing damage. By improving memory function, and with less destruction of the neurons, an individual may fight off dementia onset.
12-Month Study
The 12-month study involved 96 individuals with varying ages. They were aged 40 to 90. To test out the effect of curcumin on the brain's activity, the 96 participants were divided into two groups with one group receiving a pill that does not contain curcumin, and other receiving 1,500 mg of curcumin.
After six months, the participants were made to take a cognitive test. It was found that the group who did not take the curcumin pill exhibited decline when they were answering memory and verbal tests. On the other hand, the group that took the curcumin pill didn't show any type of decline in their brain functions.
More Research Needed?
Although according to the lead researcher, more studies are needed to give a more concrete appreciation of the ability of turmeric to fight off dementia, the study seems to hold much promise. In fact, Alzheimer's Society also said that turmeric has been shown to break down the plaques that indicate Alzheimer's disease. Putting two and two together, it may be safe to conclude that the study indeed has some bearing.
One researcher suggests that more than eating curry dishes, one way to stave off dementia onset is to stay mentally and physically active. A balanced diet, not smoking, and keeping blood pressure in check all contribute to having a healthy brain.
Curcumin Supplemention
If, like many people, you find it difficult to up your curry intake, you should strongly consider supplementing with Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric responsible for its anti inflammatory effects. But not just any Curcumin supplement will do. In order to mimic nature, BCM-95 Curcumin adds the volatile oils found in turmeric to essentially reassure the digestive system that it is ingesting something it recognizes. This nature based formula increases the absorption of this particular pill EIGHT TIMES over standard curcumin supplement. Remember, if it is not absorbed by the small intestines, your supplement becomes a placebo. It must enter the bloodstream to have any effect at all. We call this “bio-availability”, or what percentage of the supplement actually becomes available for the body to use after ingestion. Epic4Health are the bio-availability experts, using supplements that take advantage of the latest scientific breakthroughs to unlock the potential of the vitamins and supplements in our catalog.
