We recently, (February 2003), received an inquiry from a customer for our opinion about the use of DHEA and how it works against the Anabolic/Catabolic “see-saw” that accompanies aging. He was particularly interested in DHEA that derives its product form from Mexican Wild Yam. A second part of his inquiry was for information in regards to Phosphatidyl Serine (PS) and Phosphatidyl Choline. Serine for improving memory and Choline for mood stability and liver function. He wanted to know if we had any comments on these supplements. (Note: we do NOT sell these supplements). Here are the comments from our Senior Scientist:
“Even though the research on DHEA is tantalizing and mouthwatering, we are of the opinion that the safety issues pertaining to the chronic administration of DHEA have not been fully resolved. Epic will NOT promote or recommend DHEA till our Medical and Nutrition advisors are convinced by a preponderance of the evidence of its efficacy and safety. FYI DHEA extracted from Mexican Wild Yams is a bunch of ____ ____!” (Unprintable – but you get the idea!)
“Phosphatidyl Choline (PC) is a great, albeit low potency source of choline. There is considerable evidence in terms of well controlled studies which show the essentiality and benefits of choline in the diet. Phosphatidyl Serine (PS) has not been studied as extensively though preliminary studies are quite promising.”
Our Senior Scientist's final comment was:
“We are taking the wait and see approach on DHEA. We have no reservations about PS and PC.”
