CoQ10 & Heart Health

Your Heart Needs CoQ10 every second of the day.

In fact every cell in your body requires coq10 to help it produce the energy it needs to sustain life. This is because every cell has an engine known as the mitochondria. These cellular mitochondria assume the responsibility of burning fuel (glucose, fatty acids etc..) and turning it in to ATP or energy. CoQ10 is essential to this process and without it the mitochondria would fail.

With this in mind there are certain organs and systems in your body that have higher energy requirements than others. For instance, your big toe doesn’t really do all that much so the amount of energy producing cells in that area of your body will be minimal.

On the other side of the spectrum is your heart. The average heart beats approximately 100,000 times in a day and around 35 million times a year. The heart is an organ that never sleeps. All of that work it’s doing means that the heart requires the most energy producing cellular mitochondria in the entire body. This also means that the heart requires the most Coenzyme Q10.

Obviously it’s important to maintain healthy CoQ10 levels in order to provide your body, and especially your heart, the energy it needs to function. But this is not always possible. Around the age of 40 our bodies begin to lose the ability to synthesize CoQ10 in order to circulate it at adequate levels. This means that supplementation becomes imperative to counteract the natural age related deficiency.

CoQ10 deficiency is associated with a number of cardiovascular problems including angina, arrhythmia, heart failure and high blood pressure.

Statin drugs block cholesterol production. They also block CoQ10 production because CoQ10 and cholesterol are produced in the same place. This means that anyone on a statin drug is at risk of CoQ10 deficiency and should seriously consider supplementation.

Did you know that the there is one other part of your body that shares the same exact type of connective tissue as the heart: the gums. In fact, bleeding gums is often a sign of both heart health issues and low blood coq10 levels. Anyone suffering from gum disease should seriously consider supplementation with CoQ10 because more than just your gum health is at stake.

How Much CoQ10 should I take?

This is a question for your doctor. The gold standard for CoQ10 supplementation is 100mg daily. As you age and/ or introduce complicating factors like statins, increased dosages may be recommended. The good thing is that our water soluble, enhanced absorption CoQ10 supplements are both safe and effective. With a water soluble CoQ10 the body naturally absorbs what it needs and eliminates any excess.

So remember, CoQ10 is not just a heart health supplement. It’s used by all the energy producing cells in your body. But there are more energy producing cells in your heart than any other part of the body. Maintaining healthy CoQ10 levels is a heart smart way to help your cells produce the energy you need to thrive!
